Honouring a Legacy of Adventure and Education
Ronnie McLernon, a former teacher, devoted much of his life to guiding and educating young people, particularly those from less privileged backgrounds. His passion for outdoor physical education led him to become one of the founding members of the Western Board Ski Trip.
During his years at St. Patrick’s High School, which later merged with St. Brigid’s to become Sacred Heart College, Omagh, Ronnie organised countless ski trips to destinations including Italy, France, Austria, Switzerland, and Bulgaria. He firmly believed in the value of travel and outdoor learning in building confidence, resilience, and a sense of independence among students.
Beyond the slopes, Ronnie championed cross-community football projects and led international youth trips—including a boxing tournament in New York in 2000. His professionalism, humour, and compassionate leadership left a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of working or travelling with him.
Ronnie had a unique gift for communication, a sharp wit, and a deep empathy that allowed him to connect with young people—particularly those who needed guidance and support. He believed in helping students realise their full potential through adventure and learning beyond the classroom.
The Foundation and Its Purpose
Ronnie sadly passed away suddenly in November 2021. In loving memory of Ronnie and in recognition of his lifelong dedication to youth education and adventure, Topflight for Schools has established the Ronnie McLernon Foundation. The Foundation honours Ronnie’s enduring friendship with our team and carries forward his mission by helping pupils who face financial hardship take part in school ski trips.
Each year, the Foundation provides fully funded places to deserving students – ensuring that those who might otherwise miss out can experience the excitement, learning, and personal growth that come from travel and adventure.**
The schools chosen each year will be notified of The Ronnie McLernon Foundation place by the end of September.
At this point, we would ask you, the Group Leader, to choose a student, who is not already booked on your ski trip, and would not otherwise have the opportunity to participate in the school ski trip due to financial barriers, and would benefit greatly from some sunshine in their lives.
We hope that this opportunity will provide a lasting and meaningful experience for selected pupils, in the spirit of Ronnie’s enduring legacy.
